A primary purpose of the fine arts department is to offer courses applicable for transfer to a four-year institution. While the A.F.A. degree does not satisfy the general education requirements for most baccalaureate institutions, all courses are transferable. Students should consult the catalog and/or transfer manual of the school to which they plan to transfer before selecting courses. Students pursuing an art major and transferring credits to a four-year institution may complete all basic art requirements during the two years at SFCC.
The A.F.A. degree courses prepare students to transfer to a four-year institution with a minimum of 90 credits which include many general university requirements. Because faculty coaching of studio and performance work is essential for this degree, at least 30 credits in art must be earned at SFCC (including the final quarter of the program). A cumulative grade point of 2.0 or better must be maintained. For specific degree requirements and the recommended scope and sequence, refer to the Career Planning Guides located in the SFCC Counseling Center (509-533-3525) and the SFCC Art Department (509-533-3710).
An A.F.A. candidate will prepare a portfolio of original work and slide or video documentation of work completed at SFCC. A faculty adviser and a committee of faculty will review portfolio progress at the end of the first and second years.
All A.F.A. students are assigned an art faculty adviser to assist in the planning of their program. Since some art classes may not be offered each quarter, students should consult the annual schedule as they plan their program. All studio classes should be taken in sequence. Art history courses, however, may be taken in any order. Substitutions may be made only with the approval of the department chair and the associate dean, and requests for such substitutions must be made on the Request for Waiver form.
The Certificate of Fine Arts (C.F.A.) affirms completion of work and is suitable for art professionals, but is not a transfer certificate. However, the courses are above 100 and are listed in many catalogs for four-year colleges and universities. Most courses will transfer. The program can be completed in two years. To develop a better assimilation of concepts and skills, a longer time span may be suggested for some students.
Each C.F.A. student is assigned an art adviser who helps plan his or her program. Students must submit a portfolio and participate in an exhibition during their final quarter. A candidate for a certificate in fine arts must complete a minimum of 96-100 quarter hours with a grade point average of 2.0 or better. The art adviser and art faculty will work with and evaluate the work of the student before final approval and recommendation to award the certificate in fine arts.
Because the first two years of college are spent primarily in meeting general college requirements, a great many options are available to students who plan to complete their freshman and sophomore years at Spokane Falls Community College.
The community college degree which offers the most direct route for transfer is the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree. Although this degree is accepted by all of Washington's four-year institutions and constitutes the first two years of work toward a bachelor's degree, individual departments may impose special requirements. These lower-division courses concentrate on the broad general education components of the degree rather than focusing on the major field. At most four-year schools the major is completed in the last two years.
